Net-Zero by 2050 – A Portfolio-Driven Approach to Innovation
The European Innovation Council (EIC) has launched a strategic portfolio under the Pathfinder Challenge Programme titled Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC). This initiative supports a visionary rethinking of the construction sector by promoting breakthrough technologies that integrate computational design, digital fabrication, and advanced materials into a unified, digitally-driven framework.
The AEC Portfolio is managed by Programme Manager Franc Mouwen and brings together 10 pioneering projects selected through the 2023 EIC Pathfinder Challenge. Among them is STACK, which contributes to the Portfolio’s joint mission to redefine sustainability, performance, and collaboration in the built environment.
At the heart of the AEC Challenge is the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions embedded in construction processes and materials—an area that has so far seen limited progress. The Portfolio's shared ambition is to support the EU’s climate targets: a 55% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050.
The Portfolio approach promotes cross-disciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange between projects. Rather than working in isolation, participating projects are expected to build synergies, co-develop methodologies, and explore shared technological and market challenges.
The 2023 Portfolio has two core ambitions:
By fostering innovation at the intersection of design, fabrication, and materials, the EIC Pathfinder Challenge 2023 aims to transform the AEC industry into one that is more sustainable, digitally advanced, and resilient.
The 10 projects of the 2023 AEC Portfolio are:
